LA GRANDE VERRIÈRE DU THÉÂTRE DES VARIÉTÉS A BEZIERS (34)

Au bout de deux ans d’une aventure technique et patrimoniale complexe, nous avons enfin « ressuscité » les verrières Art Nouveau du Théâtre des Variétés de Béziers (1904); classé Monument Historique, totalement réhabilité dans ses moindres détails.

En collaboration avec Carlo Roccella de Vitrail Architecture et la Ville de Béziers, qui m'a missionné de reconstituer les 4 personnages représentant les 4 saisons. Un défi pour lequel j'ai dû associer mes compétences d'artiste plasticien et celles de restaurateur d'art: à l'aide des techniques contemporaines, les personnages ont été reconstitués dans leur forme originelle probable et ont été recréés pour les parties manquantes, tout en respectant la valeur patrimoniale de la verrière et en s'appuyant le plus possibles sur des preuves.

Nos ateliers ont travaillé main dans la main, pour rétablir minutieusement les motifs d’origine, à partir de quelques images anciennes, de longues recherches d’archives et de vestiges détruits à 70%. Il aura fallu, une analyse spectrographique des vestiges en vitrophanie, un patient travail de ré-interprétation selon l’esthétique de 1904, une infinité de tests mécaniques et colorimétriques... pour aboutir à cette réalisation de 50 m2 qui réunit un artiste inconnu de la Belle Époque et les techniques verrières les plus pointues du XXI siècle.

Le théâtre est ouvert depuis janvier 2026.

THE LARGE GLASS ROOF OF THE THÉÂTRE DES VARIÉTÉS

After two years of a complex technical and heritage adventure, we have finally "resurrected" the Art Nouveau stained glass windows of the Théâtre des Variétés de Béziers (1904); classified as a Historic Monument, totally rehabilitated down to the smallest detail.

In collaboration with Carlo Roccella from Vitrail Architecture and the city of Béziers, who commissioned me to reconstruct the 4 characters representing the 4 seasons. A challenge for which I had to combine my skills as a visual artist and those of an art restorer. Using contemporary techniques, the figures were reconstructed in their most probable original form and were recreated for the missing parts, while respecting the heritage value of

the glass roof and relying as much as possible on documentation as evidence.

Our workshops worked hand in hand, to meticulously restore the original motifs, from a few old images, long archival research and 70% destroyed remains. It took a spectrographic analysis of the remains in window displays, a patient work of reinterpretation according to the aesthetics of 1904, an infinity of mechanical and colorimetric tests... to achieve this 50 m2 project that brings together an unknown artist of the Belle Époque and the most advanced glass techniques of the 21st century.

The theatre opened its doors in January 2026.
